The latest macOS Sierra introduced many spectacular features like Siri, Apple Pay, Picture-in-Picture, Auto-Unlock and more. Yet, many Mac users may overlook a handy feature called Markup that is hidden in the Photos app. The little built-in feature offers some options that allow you to add texts, callouts, shapes, and more to images and documents. Haven’t heard it before? Read this article to learn more.

Here’s how to access to the Markup editor in the Photos app in macOS Sierra:

  1. Open the Photos app from Dock, Launchpad, Spotlight or Applications folder.
  2. Locate the photo you would like to edit in the Photos, and double click on it.
  3. Click the edit hamburger menu at the top right corner of the Photos window.
  4. Click on Extensions at the bottom of the menu located on the right of the screen.
  5. Click on Markup to display the editing tools available in the Markup window.

Now you can make the best of the Markup editor by following the instructions below.

  • To draw your photos, click on the Pen button at the upper left corner, select the color of the lines, and draw starts, hearts, arrows and any other shapes to your photos. To get more color options, click on the Square icon beside the uppercase A to display more. To change the thickness of the lines, click on the three-lines icon, and decide the thickness or the texture you would like to use from the drop-down menu.
  • To add shapes to photos, click the Circle icon on the tip of the Square icon from the menu, select the shape you want to use from the menu, and then adjust it as desired.
  • To add text to your photos, click the icon that looks like an uppercase T in a box. Then a text box will be automatically added to the photo, and you can type in any words you like. You can also move the text box to any other place on the photo. To adjust your text, extend the drop down menu and you can change the text format from there.

There are many other editing tools you can utilize and here we only list some common-used ones. You can explore the others by yourself. And after the editing is finished, click on the Save Changes in the upper right corner to take effect.
